Given our anxiety levels moving cross-country in a pandemic is about as stressful as you’d imagine—a part of me is amazed that we still like each other so much. We’ve even managed to have some sex amid the year’s chaos. Still, there are challenges. Soon after we arrived in Iowa City, COVID-19 cases skyrocketed, forcing us into isolation in a strange new place. We have had to learn how to accommodate each other’s contrasting methods of coping—I compulsively work and exercise while she stares out the window. Both of us cry a lot. But when I start to wallow, I remind myself how much worse it would be if I hadn’t learned how to be alone before all of this happened. I spent the Dogs in truck American flag country roads take Me home to the place I belong shirt better part of my thirty-sixth year intentionally celibate, and it’s not an exaggeration to say that until that point—it was the best year of my life.
